There are two different types of surgical abortion. The first is known as aspiration. During this procedure, a manual syringe method is used to provide a gentle suction action to eject the fetus from the uterus. This procedure can be used for up to 16 weeks of pregnancy. This procedure will be complete in about 16 minutes. The second procedure is known as dilation and evacuation. In this procedure, the cervix is dilated and a tube is inserted into the uterus to gently vacuum the fetus and tissue from the uterus. The procedure is commonly used in later pregnancies beyond the 16-week period. It takes between 10 and 20 minutes to perform. During these procedures, you will be given a local numbing medication for pain. Surgical abortion is highly effective and works just about every time they are performed.
